Rolling
Dice

Rolling
dice is similar to tossing a coin as seen before, except now the object
has six sides, so obviously there are six possibilities. The probability
of rolling a particular number like '2' is 1/6. This is a good time
to understand how we get this number, the numerator of the fraction
(top) is the number of outcomes and the denominator (bottom) is the
total number of possible outcomes. |

So
again we can calculate the possibility of throwing two sixes in a
row or the possibility of throwing a pair of sixes with a pair of
dice as 1/6 x 1/6 = 1/36. Note that the probability of a particular
outcome has decreased significantly with the increase of the number
of possibilities. And with the rule of addition we know that the probability
of rolling a 1, 2 OR 3 is 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 = 3/6. and so the probability
of rolling a pair or succession of anything between 1 and 3 is 3/6
x 3/6 = 9/36. Another way of looking at it is by thinking that with
a pair of dice there are 36 possible combinations 9 of which are between
1 and 3. |
